First of all.......welcome to the wonderful world of audio Dr.T ! :-) A
few thoughts and parallels for you. Binaural recordings are not
considered the state of the art method for enjoying audio. (Similar to
enjoying an image in a viewer) The success of broadcasting quality audio
would be similar to showing a well projected slide. The challenge is to
reach larger audiences similtaneously, or, to recreate the live
experience. 5.1 audio best produces live realism. Headphones create an
artificial soundstage, and will create listening fatigue. The listeners
own environment, the room ambience, body and head positioning, dynamics,
harmonics, and lower bass frequencies, reflections etc.....ALL are
virtually eliminated with headphones. Headphones often "color" the sound
and influence direction....which is why many lower quality recordings
sound better with headphones. Just like an average image appears to look
better in a viewer. Good quality recordings that translate well through
various speaker setups is difficult to achieve. Good equipment, good
ears, and audio knowledge are foremost to produce such recordings. As
someone who has years of audio and mixing experience, I have learned
much more, and my audio mixes are much better. I have my own CD burner
and mini-studio, and with modest gear I have produced some " big-time"
sounding recordings.
Think of how much you have learned over the years about stereo
photography........you must pay the same dues to understand audio with
as much competence. Jon Golden? Other audio buffs who have the same
experiences, would you agree? Mark Dottle
