Actually if I'm correct, it's the brightest in 68 years (or something
similar). The 133 year figure is the coincidence within 24 hours of
the full moon and the winter solstice.

This has been extensively discussed on my overland trails mailing list
as the Lakota Sioux took it (in 1866) to be a sign that they should
launch an attack, leading eventually to the Fetterman massacre.
