<< I speculate: the Cyclops eye was unlike the human eye; rather it
was a siamese twin of an eye with two retinas, two optic paths that
shared one pupil and iris. We have seen discussions of single-lens
stereoscopy on this list before; since the Cyclops was a giant, and had
one GIANT (not normally proportioned) eye, he surely had enough parallax
across his cornea to rival the stereo perception of his puny human
rivals. >>
Or how 'bout this: The giant Cyclops had a rather slow-functioning brain,
which was able to retain the image registered by his single eye. When he
side-stepped the appropriate distance, the retained image fused with the new
image to create -- EUREKA! -- stereopsis. He may have been dumb, he may have
been ugly, but, boy, could he cha-cha!
Incidentally, I have a neat video clip (or whatever you call it in cyber-ese)
showing Cyclops' prom date in a slinky evening get-up, singing her theme
song. If anybody's interested, e-mail me off list, and I'll send it to you
for downloading. Limited to the first five requests; I don't want to make a
career of this....
