I agree that the RBT S-1 is the best new 35mm stereo camera to be had
out there. I'd like to add that IMHO there really isn't a single "best"
stereo camera. Why not give yourself some different options for different
types of shooting? I've recently been experimenting with hypers using
twinned Ricoh XR-10M 35mm SLRs. Using spliced together wire from Radio
Shack I've been able to maintain perfect shutter synchronization with the
cameras 10 feet apart or more. This yields spectacular results shooting
urban skylines, and none of the retinal rivalry from out of sync moving cars
etc. that I see in so many hyper shots (like those from 3Discover). I
hardly had to sell anything to afford these cameras. Of course this rig
isn't much use for the quick, hand-held closer shots that the S-1 excells
at. Another direction to consider is medium format. Your options there
include trying to get a Sputnik fixed up or twinning some older MF TLRs.
I've seen incredible slides produced both ways.
