There are some software packages that do what you are talking about. I have
no experience with them, but the ones I have seen advertised are:

MetaCreations Canoma $439

I've seen a couple of others but can't find the references for them. Has
anyone used these ? They are of interest from a model builders perspective
as well. This would be an easy way to produce scaled drawings that could
then be used to build a physical (true 3D) object that could then be
photographed!

I also recently saw a catalog with a special camera for $5k. I think this
used a special flash that would project a grid over the object to be
converted to a 3d model. This was a combination of camera and software to
get the final result. It looks like this works for things you could put on
a table top.
