P3D Re: Internet & Publications

Ways to make a publication as compressed as possible.
Make sure your images are reproduced and scanned at the appropriate size!
You don't need a 600-1200 dpi image for a print or screen based document -
72 dpi is the correct scan rate.
Some desktop publishing tools allow you to crop an image, but they don't
really cut the excess image out of the file. If you are using a small
corner of an image, scan it that way, don't rely on your layout tool to do
the cropping.
If it is line art, make sure you use the B&W scan mode rather than
greyscale. B&W uses 2 bits per pixel in the file while grey scale can use 8
or more.
Where color isn't all the important, make sure you use as few colors as
possible so you don't have a large color map, or conflicting color maps.
Finally when you go to send the file via email use something like WinZip to
compress the last few bits out the file. This doesn't affect the final
quality of the publication, it just means that the file has to be unzipped
before it can be read.
Also, you don't need to send the file via email. If the club has a website,
just place the PDF on line at the site. PDF allows the access of individual
pages (only that page downloads, not the whole file) and if the reader
wants a copy, they can choose when to download the file.
