No. The Minolta camera uses structured light to recover the 3D shape of the
object. I saw one at last years Siggraph, so it's already more than 6 months
old, and they started raving about it already a year ago. It's easy to find
more information about it using search engines and keywords '3d
reconstruction' and 'structured light'.
