George - I think you knew what you were going to do before you put the
question to the list! Are you perhaps really asking if there is some
"provenance" protocol in the collection and sale of photographic
collectibles? Is there a standard expectation that a seller account for
the rightful chain of possession of any items coming into his or her
collection or that he offers for sale? Not that I've heard of. You are
legally and ethically in the clear, from what we are hearing and from what
I know.
Beyond that, you seem to agree with my point exactly, that these ethical
decisions lie in *your* priorities and what sort of person you are working
at being. You will pursue these things as far as your interest and
ability allow, balancing them against your other ethical duties as you see
them (reading to children is a nice rhetorical touch - wish I'd thought of
it). I only offered that doing what some Sell-3D moralist suggested in
this case might have benefits for you! So the only question left is, do
you need to ask the list anything else about this situation? I, for one,
haven't gone to P3d for ethical advice since I decided my fouled up E6
looked good enough to send on circuits! ;-)
Regarding my availability to research your pictures, I'm still planning my
article, as well as fielding a couple of requests for personal editing
services, and a request for my contributions to a new "Stereoscopy"
column, that I have gotten since suggesting that the established
membership of ISU should generate more material for publication (strange
how our arguments here lead us to unintended and irrelevant ends - I don't
remember advertising myself as writer or editor; quite the opposite!).
Not that I might not enjoy meeting your mystery family, if I had the time
and interest!
Anything else on your mind?
Helpfully,
Bruce (the "idealist" with a Realist) Springsteen
