I do carry a matte board with cutout.  It works fine for 2d composition.  But it
does not simulate the effect of a 3d window very well.  First, a realistic
window needs to be more than an arm's length away.  Secondly I tend to be
distracted by objects outside the edge of the matte when viewing with both eyes.
That is why I made the card into a box.  But it still did not have enough
what-you-see-is-what-you-get quality to be useful to me.
