P3D Re: Nimslo Camera

Since the Nimslo wasn't made for auxiliary lenses, it's however
you can manage to fasten them on. I at first made an adapter by
removing the glass from a (metal, with screw-in retaining ring
holding the glass) used 49mm UV filter. I drilled four holes in
it and looped rubber bands through them. Then I put the other
ends of the rubber bands through a split key ring. Sort of awkward,
with the filter ring in front (covered two lenses) and the key
ring in back, but it worked. Others have used rubber bands to
attach reading glasses, with "legs" removed, in front, or even
large rectangular magnifiers. Larger filter rings could be used
the way I did as well--these bigger lenses can be used with
the first and third, or second and fourth lenses, if greater
separation is desired.
Technical Enterprises made closeup attachments for their reworked
Teco-Nimslo. I've heard their tabs can be bent and the
attachments used on ordinary Nimslos, fastened on with tape.
My personal favorites are the lenses from StereoType
(stereotype@xxxxxxxxxxxxx). Craig Daniels cuts down larger
filters into little rectangles that cover two lenses. They
come in "macro" (about 9 inches focusing) and "portrait"
versions. I have a number of excellent stereo portraits
done this way. I use Velcro to attach mine. Craig also supplies
the "Scenics" distance lenses, the only ones that correct
the Nimslo's lack of focusing to infinity. These are little
squares that go over the outer two lenses. Velcro again for
me--just be careful not to lose them!
The Nimslo's all-glass lenses have a well-deserved reputation
for sharpness--I've been very pleased with mine. The auto
exposure may vary from the indicated film speed, and sometimes
you have to cover the metering cell with neutral density filters
to make adjustments (besides any variations, it has only the 100
and 400 settings, but tends to underexpose)--once you get the hang of
where your camera is at, the meter is pretty accurate.
