Paul Talbot just make a very good comment, bringing "stretch"
into the picture... "Stretch" in the z-direction (exaggeration
of depth) comes about when the viewing distnace is larger than
the recording distance (or the FL of the viewing lenses is
longer than the FL of the recording lenses)
The combination of these two factors explains your obervation:
A smaller image (as in projection or freeviewing) shows a clear
stereo window because 1) the edges are easier to observe, 2)
"stretch" tends the emphasize "through the window" effects.
