P3D Re: SI, anaglyphs, etc.

Tony made an eloquent defense of the "fun" of an imperfect world, as if it
had been questioned, but I missed the trigger for that. All I've seen is
some honest critique of the SI issue, and Boris being a little
provocative, then apologetic about seeming to disparage a talking dog or
something.

Well, anyone who is looking for unqualified praise of their opinions or
stereo efforts, in the name of "supporting" the faith, better not come to
P3D. I figured that out long ago and am glad for it. P3D discussion
ain't perfect, but it's better than a poke in the eye with a red hot olive
stick. It's a wonderful list. ;-)

Did I mention lately that I am head-over-heels in love with anaglyphs and
with David Klutho's stereo photography and with pretty much everything Ray
Zone and Tony Alderson have ever produced in this red and blue medium?
Thought I had. I've certainly spent enough money on it.

In any case, I don't agree with anyone who thinks the SI issue is a bad
thing for 3D - quite the opposite - I think it is a coup. But I also
agree that, unless someone figures out a way to get good quality images
from Klutho's stop-action sports stereo to the wide audience, the big
opportunity has not been siezed, and any end-zone dance is a bit
premature. Maybe the magazine *isn't* the place to expect that, for all
the political and economic and logistical reasons given. We shall see.

Also, I think Boris' critique is very interesting, and I am sure he will
welcome similar comment on his own published efforts, now and in the
future. Folks who crave the national media spotlight can't have thin
skins and glass jaws. Others on list have already offered their
"uneducated" opinions that the SI anaglyphs look a little compressed or
cardboardy or whatever, and it is true, and an analysis of why that may be
so is appropriate here. If not here, then where? Telling the 3D crowd
that they are too picky is a bit like telling the customers that they
don't know what they want. The SI readers may love you now, but who you
gonna wake up with in the morning? Us. We think you're beautiful, but if
you walk out in public with your buttons in the wrong holes, or spinach in
your teeth, we may presume to say so without being accused of disloyalty.
If you have good reasons for these imperfections, we stand ready to hear
and sympathize.

An imperfect world includes imperfect critique. And that's fun too,
right?

Bruce
