I believe implosion refers to the fact that they are attempting to take the structure down from the inside out.  From specials I've seen on building demolition, they first strip the building down basically to floors and support columns.  They then drill holes and load dynamite in the various support columns and place this on a staggered timer system.  The idea is to have the center knocked down first followed by the outside supports.  If everything is timed right, the center of the structure starts pulling the outsides of the structure inward as it falls.  The net result is that the building collapses in on itself (i.e. implodes).

One of the most spectacular demolitions I remember was the demolition of one of the Vegas casinos.  Highly televised and shamelessly promoted, it was nontheless quite spectacular.  Once the demolition started, you could hear the internal explosions and see the explosive flashes.  Then, like a card house, the whole thing just caved in on itself.

I might just have to log in on Sunday to watch that.
