IMPLOSIONS!!! are a major consideration for all underwater 3D deep water
photographers. An underwater housing for a camera has an increased chance
of IMPLODING - collapsing in on itself due to increased water pressure - as
one takes the camera deeper. The photographic equipment on the Titanic
expeditions experienced pressure in excess of 1 ton per square inch. A
lens port of four square inches would have over 4 tons of pressure on it's
surface. That pressure is so great, that IF the front lens port were to be
forced inward - IMPLODE- it could force the lens at camera inward with such
force and SPEED that it could come out the back of the casing and like a
bullet, possibly damaging the submersible vehicle that the photographers are
in, causing IT to implode. Not a pretty thought. Your average six foot
diameter spherical chamber that would house underwater photographers at a
depth of a mile in the ocean have a total force on the surface of over
SIXTEEN THOUSAND TONS - all photographers working at that depth are well
aware of the consequences of such an IMPLOSION!!!!!!!!! All cameras used
in deep water are tested to prevent such catastrophic IMPLOSIONS.
