[photo-3d] Shooting Barbies

The Barbie pictures that were just posted (very interesting,
Gabriel--especially the second one, where the viewer is coming
out of the window!) made me wonder--is there anyone else on the
list who does stereo Barbie shots? (I am aware that there are
people out there who would just plain like to shoot Barbies,
period!) I've used slidebar, beamsplitter, and Nimslo so far, and
it's always difficult, but the results are rewarding. Just how I
got into doing this is another story, but it has been fun!

I made a "room" out of a big box with three sides cut away.
Carpet samples look nice on the "floor," and colored poster
board looks good on the "walls." Solid (not stranded) insulated
bell wire can be used to make a "third leg" for the dolls to
stand up (it must be positioned behind them so it can't be
seen). Well-chosen furniture and household items add to the
scenes. For a simple "fashion" shot of a doll alone, poster
board makes a good seamless background. Since Kodachrome 200
works so well under fluorescent, I got a couple of old lamps,
one shorter and one taller, and put GE Biax 9-watt compact
fluorescent adapters into them. For other films, proper filtration
could work well if you are doing cha-cha or beamsplitter with
an electronic shutter that goes down below one second. I've also
done outdoor shots with Kodachrome 64 (I prefer an 81A filter
with this film). Using a standard beamsplitter with its 70mm base
does result in an exaggerated stereo effect, but this is usually
pleasant and enhances the experience for most of the people
who have viewed the results. Of course Barbies don't move and
with a slidebar you can have any stereobase you want.
