The 285 has a few "extra" features, such as a variable power
unit that let you shoot at full 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16. This
is useful for manual flash set ups. I believe it also has a
zoom head (the 283 is fixed). The 285 is also somewhat
physically larger although both have the same stated GN of 120
(in feet at ASA 100).
I much prefer the 283. But that is probably because I have
used it so much and value the smaller size and less weight
when I have to rappel and climb 200 feet and belly crawl
through 500 feet of 10 inch tall passage to get to the pretty
spot in a cave.
