I much prefer the 283. But that is probably because I have

Don't sell that zoom head short; it's helped me a lot in targeting light
where I need it. Another good feature of the 285, since I use an outboard
battery pack, is that you can actually shut off the 285's flash mechanism
with the battery cable in place on the flash. Can't do that with the 283. And
the weight difference isn't anywhere near as great as Dr. Dave would have us
believe.
