As telecommunications via computer networks have developed, mailing lists
now seem to occupy a place which is part magazine and part telephone "party
line". The aim of all listowners is to get a mailing list to the point of
being pretty much self - running. To facilitate that, we encourage the
"Eight golden rules" of mailing lists:

1. No administrivia going out.

2. High informational content.

3. Do not overquote previous material (ie, low redundency redundency).

4. Are germane to the subject of the list.

5. Subscriptions be established on a DIGEST basis (although I'm personally
somewhat neutral on that since the number of bytes transmitted is pretty
constant regardless of whether you are in ACK or DIGEST mode).

6. Civility - no useless "flame wars".

7. Participation - a large percentage of subscribers contribute.

8. Personal messages between group members are exchanged via direct e-mail
rather than being posted to the list (unless the information will be of
interest to the readership in general).
