It is recommended that they are parallel but they
do not have to be.  If they are not parallel then 
something called "keystone distortion" will occur.
However, this distortion can be barely noticeable.

There is one advantage in converging the cameras:
The stereo window is placed at the plane of 
convergence.  This means 1) no need to worry
about setting the window by remounting,
2) utilization of the entire image area (image 
is lot if the window is set by masking)

Bottom line:  If you are going to remount and have
space to put a good window, keep the cameras
parallel.  Otherwise, converge them.
