Easily. Their moral character allows them to assume that because they
find something useful then everyone will also find it useful and thank
them for being considerate enough to put them on the list. Also,
technically it is very very easy . . .
One of the features for Onelist/Egroups when you create a group (or even
after a group has been around) is the "Invite" doohicky. Some groups
only allow Moderators to do this but others allow Members to do it.
With this feature you can input a list of email addresses and names of
folks who you "invite" to join your new list. The invitation can be set
one of two ways, if they hit the enclosed link they go to the group's
subscription page to join or, if you like, you can sign them up
automatically and they have to hit the link and go through the
unsubscription process to get off the list. Egroups warns folks to be
wary and to use the second option sparingly (after thinking about it).
When I set up the 3D-Glamourphoto list I made a list of folks who I
thought might be interested in the content and put them on my invite
list so they knew the list was out there and would have the option of
joining . . . I suspect they might have been offended to have been
automatically subscribed (I'm sure I'd be ticked to find myself on
discussion lists without my permission). When I created the Taipei-ITS
list I did automatically subscribe the main organizers from the old list
onto the new one as it was merely a matter of changing list servers not
membership.
