[photo-3d] Joining two camera bodies?

Some of the RBT models are, I believe, made by cutting the bodies of
existing cameras, connecting the shutters, and rejoining the bodies. I've
also seen pictures of other rigs like that. There are a couple in
Ferwerda's book, on pages 73 and 74, and I've just seen a picture of a
joined pair of Ricoh cameras like that.

My question is: How in the heck to they do that? I might almost consider
trying it, but I wouldn't even know how to begin. Can you get detailed
specs on these camera bodies from the manufacturer? How to you know where
to cut? What do you cut with? How do you link the shutters? How to you
re-join the bodies?

Is there any information like this available?
