The March issue of Rotunda (the newsletter for members of the American
Museum of Natural History) featured an article on the creation of the
dioramas the museum is famous for.  One of the photographs shows an
artist painting a curved background.  In the exhibit with him is a
panoramic painting of the scene to be depicted and on a small table a
Realist viewer and a box of stereo slides.
