>Left bids at the NSA auction are the equivalent of the max bid.

I have witnessed live auctions where the auctioneer suggests
that the level of a maximum bid is approaching and encourages
bidders to go a bit higher to overcome it. This is certainly
unfair to the long-distance bidder and cannot happen in ebay :-)

On another subject, I had a Keystone stereoview of "Falls of
Minnehaha, MINNEAPOLIS" recently in ebay. The highest bidder
was a person with an address "Minnehaha Parkway" who lives 2
miles from the spot where this picture was taken. Amazing!

My son for his birthday (which, like my wife's, is on Christmas
day) wanted a GameBoy Color. One week before Christmas
ALL THE STORES, brick & mortar and Internet, were out of
GameBoy, period. Where else can a good father go to make
his son's wish come true, but EBAY? GameBoy's were auctioned
dozens by the minute but at prices higher than the store's
(when on stock). Finally we found a seller who took credit
cards, fought and "won" and had it delivered on Friday just
before Christmas. My 8 year old son was so excited, he could
not sleep that night. "Dad, I feel like we won the lottery"
he said. Talking about auction fever!

My daughter (11) wanted Nancy Drew book no. 31 to complete
her collection of Nancy Drew books. Wife suggested to check
ebay. Sure enough, truckloads of Nancy Drew books. Scrolling
down the list we located no. 31 in NEW condition closing in 2
hours. Two hours later, the book was ours for $2.50 (less
than store price) and was delivered to our house for a very
reasonable book rate.

Back to 3d. In 1988 I went to a sale of wealthy doctor's
estate who was a collector of photographic images. Down
the basement I found a bookcase loaded with stereo view
sets. I bought them all. Came home wondering how to tell
the working wife (I was a grad student) what I had just done.

I begged and promised to do the dishes (she was talking
about getting a maid) until I would sell them all via ads in
Stereo World. 12 years later I still had the stereoview
sets and I was still doing the dishes every night. I
tried to sell the Egypt set last year by begging someone
to buy it (and accompanying book) for $300. No deal.
Then came ebay. This book closed at $600 something and
the book $170. So, now I don't have to beg any more.
And I can soon stop doing the dishes and finally hire
a maid!

What else can I say? Ebay has worked for me, both ways.
So far this year I have completed some 500 transactions,
100 as a buyer and 400 as a seller. I only had a problem
(non-paying buyer) once.
