[photo-3d] Kodak Slide Trays

I just came across a problem with "Kodak Carousel Transvue 80" slide
trays that I believe those who use them for projection, might be
interested in. I use four of them for projecting stereo slide shows. I
found some slides not dropping properly during a presentation. The
slide either hung up part way or in some cases did not drop enough to
even allow the projection light to come on. I isolated the problem to
one projector.

After examining the slides themselves carefully I found some Gepe
mounted slides were not fully (very tiny amount) snapped together and at
first thought this caused the problem. However since the problem did
not occur on other trays, I reasoned the tray or projector must be at
fault.

I carefully examined the tray and found the problem. Those familiar
with the trays will know that there is a "slide retainer plate" on the
bottom of the tray. When moving from the "0" position a lever
disengages this plate so that the tray can rotate while the plate
remains ready to permit slides to drop from their individual places.
The plate is retained by a portion of the head of three screws. Surely
a poor design in such a well designed projector. I found the plate
binding on these screws in some parts of the full rotation. The
reluctance of this plate to move easily caused a few slides to not drop
properly.

If you are interested in checking your trays, first make sure the slide
retainer at the top of the tray is secure and then turn the tray over on
a table. Push the "slide retainer plate" lever down, and move the plate
around, to check for free rotation. You might also look carefully at the
inside diameter of that plate to see if the three screws have caused any
unusual wear on the plate. Be sure to bring the plate back to the "0"
locked position before turning the tray back over.

I found that I could stop the plate from binding by backing off the
three screws a slight amount. But that did not seem like a permanent
fix that I could rely on when giving a presentation, so I have changed
to new trays when I find a problem.
