I've also been playing with putting the right XR-10M behind the left one.  In this case the lense seperation is only reduced to 4 1/2", but the left lense ends up being only 1 3/4" in front of the right one.  I'll be interested to hear what you think of the results if you do try this.  The image I posted to the files has objects as close as four feet and the size discrepancy is apparent, although it doesn't bother me when fusing the image.  When I get a chance I'll post an example where the nearest object is more like 10 feet - I can't detect any size difference there.
