Your "pulfrich effect" explanation is novel, but I think the more likely
one is "out of synch." The symptoms you describe are exactly correct
for the case in which the left-eye image is lagging out of synch behind
the right-eye image by one or more frames. If the right eye image were
dimmed sufficiently for Pulfrich effect, the right-eye images would be
lagging behind the left-eye images, resulting in the reverse of the
symptoms you observed.
Another symptom of out-of-synch conditions is a kind of insubstantial,
"watery" look to moving objects, especially when there is a strong
vertical element to the movement. This annoying effect is especially
visible with fabrics and lip movements, and with strong vertical
movements and gestures. Did you notice any of this while you were
watching the films?
