Without trying to become too technical, let me just say that RGB and CMYK
are families of color spaces and for you to do precise conversion of images we
need to be more specific about *which* RGB and *which* CMYK are involved in
the conversion.  On the printing side, the dyes in ink printers are very
different than the pigments in offset lithography.  The first question
I would ask is: "Which CMYK does PhotoShop your PhotoShop think it is 
converting to?"
Quite possiby it is SWOP CMYK--which is intended for a Web Offset Press.
I suggest you look around for an ICC Profile for your output device and
get PhotoShop to use it.
