I haven't heard of that use before, but what I've read about (and used)
is to use a reversing ring on a lens such as a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera.
I put it reversed on a bellows (extension rings would work). Works pretty
well as an inexpensive macro lens, although probably not as well as a
spendy Nikon macro lens (etc). I used it for copying slides.
