Hi to Dave Kesner et al.
Well, in the '30s when 35mm came along with the Leica, there was
much derision of the format and others a bit bigger. This resuted in
defining a "miniature format" as anything smaller than 3 1/4 x 4 1/4
inches as miniature. That was a popular size then too.
Miniature cameras had all the same faults, grain, dust, and poor
enlargibilty. The Leica and Contax were considered better than
most larger folders because of good lenses. That is why the
Miniature Speed Graphic (2 1/4 x 3 1/4 in/) had its name.
Only after the Hasselblad and later Rolleis did MF format lenses
inprove to compete and LF format lenses also got better.
I have (as a collector) all formats from 9mm Minox to 5 x 7. I prefer
35mm as doing the most with greatest convenience and equipment.
Tonality is microcontrast detail which is preserved the closer you
are to a contact print. BobH
