You can project MF side by side in plastic GEPE glass mounts. Old
TDC medium format mono projectors usually run under $35 on eBay. Not
as simple as a 716A, but certainly possible.
There are certain comforts that you will do without if you choose
medium format. No question. But if comfort were paramount, you
would be shooting Polaroids. If you shoot medium format stereo, you
will not have it easy, but you will have eye-popping pictures.
The dearth of MF projection setups is due to the small numbers of MF
photographers, not to any inherent problem with MF. If you wanted to
enlarge an image to 7 feet tall, then five times as much emulsion
would certainly be no handicap.
But please let me make it clear. While the images are clearly
superior to any smaller format, everything else is a pain. You have
your choice of two viewers on the planet, one wooden, one plastic.
Sharing your images with others is nearly impossible because viewers
are so uncommon. Sputniks are plastic crap. A nice MF dual rig can
be expensive and heavier than even a Realist. You will have to learn
to use a light meter, and since you only get 6 shots to a $4 roll,
you can't simply blow film to compensate for poor technique. You
will probably end up making much of your own apparatus. You cannot
buy film at Walmart, and you can't process it at Walgreens.
If you need a reason to stick with 5p or 2x2, then there are plenty
to choose from, and I'll freely admit it. And if I were the only one
in the room with MF slides, I wouldn't mind at all.
Cordially,
Tom Deering
