No, you are not missing anything. Here is how it works:
Scenario 1: Boris' slide is mounted in landscape format.
This is rare but it is known to exist.
Solution: Mount in 33mm RBT mount (note: This is wider
that 7p, which is 28mm wide). Use DrT's red button
viewer which is opened for 8p to view it, or one of
the more expensive deWijs, etc., viewers.
Scenario 2: Boris' slide in mounted in portrait format.
This is usually the case.
Solution: Mount in 5p mount. You will lose a lot of
the image vertically. Maybe it is a problem, maybe not.
Even Boris has mounted some of his slides this way!
(to enter PSA Salons). You might consider enlarging the
slide mount, but then you have to worry about being
able to view it with common viewers.
