Fade / dissolve.  This useful tool is very overused.  It requires a
sequence of slides that have similar depth properties.  It is very
stressful to have two partly dissolved slides on the screen that have
different disparity or different near points.  This imposes very strict
requirements on the sequence of slides, that I find are almost never
adhered to.  Some people think that fast fades mean that anything goes, but
I disagree.
I think that 'old fashioned' on / off projectors are undeservedly
considered obsolete.
