[photo-3d] View-Master military reels

Last night while I was looking at some View-Master military reels, I was 
wondering about the following:

- How were these reels used for training the soldiers?
- Was there some kind of manual or book telling them how and when to look 
at the reels?
- Or did they follow classes with a teacher?
- Did they work at all?
- Was the training effect of these reels ever researched?
- Or is this still classified information and unavailable to the general 
public?
