Here is an update on my freely acquired but
rusty TDC 116. Thanks to everyone who made
suggestions. Here's what I've done so far.
I cleaned it and removed most of the rust.
Then I decided to tackle the exterior first.
It was pitted and discolored with splotches.
I sanded it down to the bare metal where the
was pitting, and removed most of the paint
from the rest of the cast aluminum. The
TDC 116 and 716 have a thick outer layer of
enamel that acquired a crinkled texture when
it dried (I once thought that the cast aluminum
was molded with that texture). Under that is a
layer of gray primer, and below that another
reddish brown primer coat. Not easy to sand of
by hand.
This TDC 116 has the front name plate that says
just "Stereo VIVID" with the word VIVID on a red
background. My other TDC 116 has the tan front
name plate. The name plate on the rusty 116 is
easy to remove, so is the rear name plate.
I painted the cast aluminum with a primer coat
then two coats of metallic blue.
I now have one unique and attractive TDC 116 ;-)
