That is precisely how I reacted to my Velvia and Provia slides. It must
have something to do with our respective subject selection and/or
exposure settings. My pictures often have gray in them (pavement,
granite, etc.). The Fuji films I have tried do not discriminate between
tints of gray. As for exposure, if I had to use Velvia or Provia again
I would try a half stop more exposure than with Kodachrome (with
respect to the nominal ISO rating, of course). This would be in an
effort to desaturate the colors and perhaps gain some subtle color
discrimination.
The qualities of Kodachrome come through mainly in hand viewing.
Stereo projection bleaches out most of the subtleties. There is
also the question of Kodachrome's high contrast. The solution for
me was exposing for the brighter areas and avoiding extensive
shadow areas, as well as using graduated neutral density filters
on occasion. In any event, Kodachrome's colors seem look
more like those I see in my viewfinder than those of other films
I have tried.
