Not sure if this is an official name but a "friction" cutter
has a knob that when you turn it advances the film by
friction (based on a set of rubber rollers which are in contact
with the film strip).  Or you can pull the film by hand as you do.
So "friction" refers to the way the film is advanced.  Other
systems are based on a sprocket wheel.
