Peter,

I was reviewing a bunch of Minox stuff on various Web sites
a couple of weeks ago (my brothers and I were all into submini
at one time or another--Minolta for the two of us and Minox
for the third) and was reading the instructions for the Minox
binocular attachment. This is the only way to do telephoto
shots with the Minox since it doesn't have interchangeable
lenses.

I did try some telephoto shots with my Minolta-16II and a
cheap monocular, but they didn't turn out well, probably
because the lenses were too small and the positioning wasn't
good. I got little circles which were too small to even
evaluate focus.

The bottom line is that the instructions tell you to focus the
binoculars as best you can and then do documented test shots
to determine which focus setting is best, trying different
settings and keeping careful track of which frame on the film
corresponds with which binocular setting. Then you have to
mark that setting on your binoculars. Your frosted tape focusing
method will probably get you into the ballpark nicely.

There was some mention made of the critical considerations
in positioning the binoculars relative to the camera, but
I'm sorry that I don't recall those. You might try looking
for Minox sites with a search engine. I don't think I bookmarked
them. But if you find them, they will give you the best advice,
since Minox made their binocular attachment for a long time
and was very serious about having the setup work. I believe
there was some information about exposure compensation as well.

Let us know how this turns out! (Might even dust off my FED
and use it again!)
