The flash fires only at 1/25s with either bulbs or electronic flash at
shutter speeds. I have been using an electronic flash for years and it
gives me good results, provided I have the shutter speed set for 1/25s.
Tydings includes an "Electronic Flash Guide-1/25 Only" table for the
Guide Numbers ranging from 19 to 52 for flash watt-second ratings from 50
to 400. He emphasizes at all points that the camera will permit flash of
any kind, bulb or electronic, to fire only with a setting of 1/25th
second and that has been my experience with both types of flash.
What you are describing must have been a modification in later models in
order to enable firing at all shutter speeds. I wish mine would work that
way.
