In new digest 214 Mark Dottle invited my comment(s):

<< .... There will be differences in color,
contrast, cropping etc. I agree the Frontier prints look much better,
much crisper etc......but I cannot conclude this as a sharpness issue.
I'll have to do some research.
 Perhaps Mike Canter can comment?

Changes in contrast (and sometimes density) often create the perception of a
change in sharpness.

When I was in the lab business (before these fancy scanners and auto film
transport, when men were men and we walked to work and back barefoot through
the snow six miles uphill each way....) I would routinely print a little dark
(just one button or so) because so many customers preferred the look.

In addition, although rare in printing (but common in exposing film), extreme
overexposure can cause halation (a scattering of light within the emulsion
itself) that causes a real loss of sharpness.
