[photo-3d] Re: realist and flash

In Digest 214 Mark Dottle writes, in part:

<< Don't forget the realist has a leaf shutter with flash sync at any
speed. You do not have to follow the guide numbers using a manual flash. >>

I'm sure that you typed that without thinking it through. The first has
nothing to do with the second. Guide numbers are used to establish apertures
and the shutter speed is not related.

The next part makes more sense:

<< ... I'll select a shutter
speed like 1/10th. This will [snip] allow
ambient background lighting to balance the shot. >>

Remember the inverse square law, though. With a direct flash, manual or
automatic, regardless of depth of field, at any given aperture only one
subject plane will be correctly exposed. While f8 (and prime focus at 8
feet) can give acceptable sharpness from 5.5 to 15 feet, direct flash can't
give you even lighting throughout that range. Subjects that are closer will
be lighter (overexposed) and subjects that are further will be darker
(underexposed).

I am a big advocate of bounce flash. I never travel without my Stofen
OmniBounce (http://www.stofen.com/) stuck on the end of my 283.
