George Eastman (of Eastman Kodak) invented flexible film because he
considered glass plates (not to mention wet plates) to be a hassle to
use in the field.

By the way, I got this information from a Kodak publication (a company
history), so if someone else wants to claim to have invented flexible
film go right ahead.
