But I'd very much like to know
the origin and history of the rounded window corners. Are they
based on historical precedent? Are there equal aesthetic merits
for "square" and "rounded" corners defining stereo windows?
Are there warring camps? :>) It would seem that except for
Spicers, the majority of current mounts have sharp, ninety
degree window corners.

The only sharp aperture corners I've seen are in plastic RBT mounts.
Though I'm not familiar with the metal mounts out there, this give me a
theory. Rounded corners may simply be a practical way to make _durable_
corners in a cardboard mount. Seems to me that a sharp corner in a
cardboard or paper aperture is going to be prone to tearing, and also more
likely to leave fuzzy bits sticking out from the die-cutting of the mount.
Sharp corners become practical on a plastic molded or metal punched mount
because the material is durable and cuts clean. This is similar to my
supposition that the rounded corners on old Holmes cards are to give
corners that won't get mashed with use, the way sharp corners will.
Just guessing here...
