Actually, there were several recent releases: "Gone With the Wind"
re-released June 1998, and "The Wizard of Oz" re-released in movie
theaters November 1998 in the U.S.A. They were not copies of Technicolor
prints that were cleaned and polished up for theatrical release, but IB
Process Release Prints. The film Batman and Robin was also released as IB
Technicolor in both London and Hollywood.
You are correct - it was the processing / printing equipment, and a new
machine was developed by Technicolor for the releases as well.
As for the negatives - I am not sure who owned the negatives - probably
whoever owns GWTW, but they were most likely made on Eastman stock, as
with most film used when GWTW was originally made. Kodak's part in the
process was Dye creation and Matrix Film production.
I apologize to the P3D Group - this is certainly off topic and I will
stop discussing Technicolor. If there are questions any of you might
have, I will be glad to correspond with you. Technicolor is something
very near and dear to me. I collect Theatrical Releases, Trailer,
memorabilia, books, whatever, related to Technicolor.
