John Goodman asked about rounded corners in Spicer stereo
mounts. Rounded corners are not unique to Spicers, nor
even to stereo mounts. (PicMount's 2D cardboard mounts
have rounded corners.) As far as Steve Spicer's decision
to make the corners round, I've been told it was based on
his personal preference for the appearance of round corners.
Round corners are more difficult and more expensive to design
(or at least they are in some cases), so mounts probably are
not made that way because of lower costs. Speculation on
reasons for arched tops of antique stereoviews sometimes
points to the tendency of cameras from that era to vignette.
Rounding the corners may serve to camouflage this flaw. As
John points out, the growing interest in scanning slides is
causing some photographers to seek out square corners. Those
who prefer the appearance of round corners but want to scan
the full image will face a dilemma!
