Mark,

There is at least one illuminated viewer for less than $85.  Our illuminated
Star D viewer is $65.  See:

Costs are also a function of volume.  The products that are available at
your stores involve very high start-up costs in order to get the cost per
unit volume down.  A multicavity mold and automated production equipment
lower labor cost.  To remake the many molds and tools needed to make a
viewer like the Star D would be far greater than $100,000 and the cost per
unit would not go down significantly unless units would be made in the
volume of 100,000 or more per year.  If one mold or stamping machine for the
Star D (formally Brumberger) viewer would be damaged it would be highly
doubtful that the current market demand would allow us to continue
manufacturing the viewer.
