You call that work? Looks like play to me!
Reminds me of a story I forgot to tell. This last winter I got to watch
Dave at "work" at a University of Kansas basketball game here in Lawrence
- he surprised me with a phone call one evening saying he was in town and
asking if I'd like to come over to the storied Allen Field House to
"assist" him in his photo-coverage of that event. "Assisting" in this
case meant that I sat with his *real* assistant at the far end of the
court, watching them "work", enjoying the game, and occasionally checking
one of the (maybe eight or a dozen - who's counting anyway?)
remote-synched Hasselblads stationed around the perimeter, to be sure it
had not been knocked off its tape marks. Most Lawrence residents would
trade their first-born to sit where I was that night, with that SI press
pass hanging pretentiously around my rubber neck. I even got paid for my
meager services!
Oh, wait, I also brought out a ladder at the half for Dave to climb and
change film in one of the Hassies mounted behind the backboard glass. And
I climbed to the catwalk afterwards (NOT for acrophobes!) to unhook
strobes and wind control lines and power cords, and then helped load the
van. If that's "work", sign me up! Of course he and his partner got out
of town at nearly midnight, for an all-night drive to St. Louis, then Dave
was flying to Florida the next day, to shoot an auto race - Daytona or
something. Not a business for low-energy types, you see.
Klutho's activity during the game looked not like work, but like a
sporting event in its own right. The way he handled his Nikon reminded me
of the crisp ready/track/fire of a skeet shooter. The blast of his
arena-filling strobes always seemed to coincide with the climax of the
crowd's roar. Quite a thrill ride from my vantage point.
During set-up before the game, Dave told me about his stereo shooting in
basketball settings (none that night, though). Just put two Hassies side
by side behind the backboard instead of one! Simple, huh? ;-) He also
gave me the hush-hush low-down on the then soon-to-be-published 3D
swimsuit issue of SI, which later became the subject of an abortive
critique in this forum. You may recall my one lament was that his sports
images were set aside for the obvious ogle factor of stereo supermodels.
I'm glad that this Olympics assignment promises at last to put Dave's best
3D foot forward for those four million readers.
That, belatedly is the account of my "Dream Date with David". Thanks to
the stereo antipodites of Sydney for the insider's view of his current
escapade - it's refreshed a uniquely pleasant memory.
Bruce
