I agree with most of your philosophical remarks (also the
not quoted ones :-)).

But with regard to stereopsis learning, please note that there 
are two types of learning. 
One is the type I hope to practice as long as I live, it is 
acquiring knowledge or getting skilled at something.
The other type is long ago for me, it involved the "hardwiring"
of the brain, when actually anatomy develops. 

It is well established that acquiring stereopsis simply is
impossible after 4 or 5 years of age, when it was absent
before that age. From Visual Evoked Response and from animal
studies is clear that this is based on irreversible alterations
in the brain. (And the possibility of fusion can be tested).

But everyone has a right to have his/her own illusions...
