I got a FED recently and even though it has the original 1.35v battery it
consistently underexposed. The quick fix for me was to put a neutral density
gel in front of the light meter hole (I could have changed the film speed
indicator as well but now it reads right).
The camera is quirky, but I haven't had any light leaks (however I did take
the precaution to seal the gap around the shutter release).
I get pretty good pictures with it now that I have gotten to know it.

One mod I just did to it though was put 49mm filter rings on it. I noticed
that the focusing rings could have worked for standard filters if they had
just threaded them (I would do that if I knew how), so I bought some cheap
UV filters, busted out the glass and filed off the threads. They then fit
perfectly within the rings without even using glue (friction is holding them
quite well). I can now use 49mm filters.

...Now I've bought a Fed. The jury's still out, so to speak, on this
camera.
My first roll only yielded ONE properly exposed stereo pair out of 20 shots.
I'm taking a second roll to make sure I didn't bump the thing off of
automatic by accident, causing overexposure....but then, some of the shots
were badly *underexposed* too! I'll know more when I get my film developed
