Exactly;  A viewer sets both the convergence and focus to trick our 
eyes into thinking the view is farther away then the 2 or 3 inches it 
is.

Right again, but with the viewer focus adjustment and built in 
convergence adjusted for distance and the DOF of his eyes it is made 
much easier.  Nothing is perfect, but with the viewer focus and 
convergence are made to overlap..  Try it without the viewer.
