Jim Crowell wrote the more or less definitive account
of 3-DVG in 1997, see the (shadow) P3D archive at:

An interesting fact is that Leonardo da Vinci already advised to 
look at paintings through a hole, which also was effective in 
minimization of monocular and binocular flatness cues, although
those terms were not yet invented.
